As weird as it was to see Perry playing for a team other than the Anaheim Ducks this year, he settled into a nice bottom-six role for the Dallas Stars after signing a one-year deal. In 57 regular-season games, he scored five goals and 21 points adding another nine in 26 playoff games.

Perry’s isolated impacts in the offensive zone were solid providing offence at a four percent rate higher than league average while defensively, his contributions were two percent worse than league average. On the powerplay, he was a very strong bringing offence at a six percent rate higher than league average.

His underlying numbers, much like they have been his whole career, were very solid. At 5v5, he dropped a 52.30 CF% and a xG% of 56.24 with a goals for rate of 60%.

Contract projection: One year, $1.031-million.

Should the Oilers be interested? Absolutely. Oilers fans would need to get beyond their obvious disdain of Perry, but the truth is despite being 35 years old, he’s still bringing great contributions on the ice. He would be a solid addition to the Oilers bottom-six.

It’s hard to imagine seeing Zdeno Chara playing anywhere beyond Boston next year. There’s a very small chance he signs anywhere else. Nonetheless, let’s take a look at what he brings to the ice at… 43 years old.

Chara is… a hockey player. Not a very good one any more, but he’s still someone who is providing some value to the Bruins blueline albeit in a second-pairing role.

This year he scored five goals and 14 points in 68 games and even received a fourth-place vote for the Norris trophy. What a year 2020 has been. Chara’s underlying numbers at 5v5 are still moderate. He posted a 46.79 CF% and an xG% of 48.46 with a goals for rate of 61.96 percent. So his raw numbers are still good, and will be able to give Boston some decent value in a second-to-third pairing next year.

Contract projection: One year, $1.981-million.

Should the Oilers be interested? No. Chara wouldn’t come to Edmonton in the first place.
