Anton Lander arrived from Sweden in 2011, and Tom Renney loved him. Thus began the meandering career of a man who is still trying to establish himself as an NHL player. At this point, is there a plan for Anton Lander as an Oiler?

Lander has played about the same number of minutes year over year, and of course the results are far different. A big part of it? The men he is on the ice with season over season (at 5×5) and his power-play minutes one year ago were productive (4-3-7 with the man advantage last year).

Although Lander did play a lot with Fraser, he also received playing time with Hall and Purcell—94 minutes with Hall at 5×5 would be about eight games worth of time at the discipline—Todd Nelson trusted his guy, and it shows.

- Luke Gazdic 84 minutes (0-1-1 and 51.9 Corsi for 5×5 percentage)
Korpikoski is the place where Corsi goes to die, so part of Lander’s problem is that the Finn is doing a dynamite Lennart Petrell impression. That is bad. Iiro Pakarinen seems a reasonable running mate, and the possession numbers with Purcell and Gazdic are better than the Korpikoski Satellites.
If Todd McLellan ran Lander with Pakarinen and (say) Hendricks, would that work? I think it might, but at this point my guess is the die is cast. Anton Lander has real abilities in certain areas, but my suspicion is that—as was the case with Boyd Gordon—the new Oilers management group has decided Lander’s issues start and end with foot speed.
There is a game on Tuesday. Will we see Anton? He is quickly reaching the point where going to the minors for a conditioning stint is the next step.
