BROSSOIT TO THE NHL

Historically, the Edmonton Oilers have been ghastly at developing goaltenders. In this century, exactly one goaltender has been developed through their system—and even then, he faltered long enough for the organization to lose him. Goalies are tough to figure out for the Edmonton Oilers. Let’s have a look at this century.

EDMONTON’S AHL GOALIES, BY YEAR

If you want to see something amazing, get a load of Edmonton’s goalies (primary and backup) since 2000:
  • 1999-00 Hamilton Bulldogs: Eric Heffler (47, 3.13 .910); Mike Minard (38, 3.08, .904)
  • 2000-01 Hamilton Bulldogs: Joaquin Gage (37, 3.33 .905); Chris Madden (26, 3.12 .909)
  • 2001-02 Hamilton Bulldogs: Marc Lamothe (45, 2.38 .918); Ty Conklin (37, 2.61 .916)
  • 2002-03 Hamilton Bulldogs: Ty Conklin (38, 2.55 .914); Eric Fichaud (27, 2.28 .925)
  • 2003-04 Toronto Roadrunners: Steve Valiquette (35, 2.59, .913); Mike Morrison (27, 2.52 .913)
  • 2004-05 Edmonton Roadrunners: Tyler Moss (50, 2.63 .906); Jeff Deslauriers (22, 2.96 .888)
  • 2005-06 Hamilton Bulldogs: Jeff Deslauriers (13, 3.15 .897); Ty Conklin (3, 3.17 .907)
  • 2006-07 SWB Penguins: Jeff Deslauriers (40, 2.47 .908); Devan Dubnyk (4, 2.94 .855)
  • 2007-08 Springfield Falcons: Jeff Deslauriers (57, 2.90 .912); Devan Dubnyk (33, 3.12 .904)
  • 2008-09 Springfield Falcons: Devan Dubnyk (62, 2.97 .906); Dany Sabourin (13, 3.17 .904)
  • 2009-10 Springfield Falcons: Devan Dubnyk (33, 3.02 .915); Bryan Pitton (8, 4.71 .857)
  • 2010-11 OKC Barons: Martin Gerber (42, 2.60 .911); Jeff Deslauriers (35, 2.81 .906)
  • 2011-12 OKC Barons: Yann Danis (43, 2.07 .924); David LeNeveu (34, 2.25 .918)
  • 2012-13 OKC Barons: Yann Danis (47, 2.59 .911); Olivier Roy (22, 2.27 .902)
  • 2013-14 OKC Barons: Richard Bachman (52, 2.99 .908); Laurent Brossoit (8, 3.60 .888)
  • 2014-15 OKC Barons: Laurent Brossoit (53, 2.56 .918); Richard Bachman (23, 2.38 .918)
  • 2015-16 Bakersfield Condors: Laurent Brossoit (26, 2.70 .921); Eetu Laurikainen (7, 3.62 .899)
The rotating list of starters is incredible, only three goalies—Jeff
Deslauriers, Devan Dubnyk and Yann Danis—managed to maintain the
starter’s role two years in a row (and LB may do it this season).
Among this group, there are a few who have played in the NHL:
  1. Devan Dubnyk 273
  2. Martin Gerber 229
  3. Ty Conklin 215
  4. Eric Fichaud 95
  5. Jeff Deslauriers 62
  6. Dany Sabourin 57
  7. Yann Danis 53
  8. Steve Valiquette 46
  9. Richard Bachman 42
  10. Tyler Moss 30
  11. Mike Morrison 29
  12. Joaquin Gage 23
  13. David LeNeveu 22
  14. Marc Lamothe 4
  15. Mike Minard 1
  16. Tyler Bunz 1
  17. Laurent Brossoit 1
Many of these games were played before Edmonton hired these goalies, specifically in the cases of Martin Gerber and Eric Fichaud. Some fun names there—Steve Valiquette was lost to waivers and had a decent run as a backup in Manhattan, Joaquin Gage is a pretty hilarious guy on the radio, Devan Dubnyk is the third best goalie Edmonton ever drafted (if you can’t name the top two then find a history book!).
Save percentages are improving over the years, but I do want to point out Marc Lamothe with a .918 save percentage in the early days of the century. That is a terrific number, bet he could have helped in the NHL that year.

      BROSSOIT BY YEAR

      • 2013-14 8gp, 3.60 .888
      • 2014-15 53gp, 2.58 .918
      • 2015-16 26gp, 2.70 .921
This is textbook progress, and at age 23, he is probably ready
for the show. If he gets into some games, and performs well, none of use should be surprised if he is the backup to begin the NHL season next fall. He is not 20, has an NHL game under his belt, and he has played in a substantial number of AHL games over the last couple of seasons.

      BROSSOIT BY MONTH

      • October: 5GP, 2.96 .912
      • November: 8GP, 1.99, .942
      • December: 3GP, 2.99, .912
      • January: 8GP, 2.61, .924
      • February: 2GP, 4.43 .854
      • Overall: 26GP, 2.70, .921
Impressive season (Feb aside, and that is 81 minutes). Brossoit is getting this chance for two reasons: He earned it, and Anders Nilsson has struggled badly. If LB performs well, he may not see the minors for years. There is a job available, and he has earned the chance to win it.
