Offensive struggles also haunted the club in last summer’s playoff bubble, with the Oilers scoring more than three times on just three occasions during a 2-6 season-ending run.
Wednesday night marks the debut of several new Oilers, including defenseman Tyson Barrie and forward Kyle Turris. But the club’s offensive fortunes will once again hinge on the play of superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The big German returns to action as the reigning Hart Trophy winner, but trails the favourite McDavid as a +1000 wager to repeat.
Listed as +115 underdogs at betting sites for Wednesday’s contest, the Canucks open the season amid high expectations after getting to within one game of a berth in last season’s Western Conference Final. Vancouver was among the NHL’s highest-scoring teams last season at 3.25 goals per game, but the club was also among the leaders in goals per game allowed and compiled a weak 14-18-2 record on the road.
However, with their rebuild accelerating, the Canucks tightened things up considerably in the bubble, allowing just 2.53 goals per game in 17 playoff contests.
