For the third consecutive season, Oilers captain Connor McDavid has been nominated for the Ted Lindsay Award. The award, which will be handed out on June 19th at the NHL Awards, goes to the most outstanding player in the NHL as voted on by the NHL Players Association.
In a surprise to no one, Connor McDavid has once again been nominated for the Ted Lindsay Award as the league’s best player according to his peers, an award he’s won the last two seasons. McDavid played in 78 games for the Oilers in 2018-19, he missed a couple of games due to illness and another pair because of a suspension, and still set a career-best with 41 goals and 75 assists for 116 points, placing him in second place overall in league scoring, trailing only Nikita Kucherov.
The former first overall pick led all NHL scorers in even-strength points (81) and average time on ice (22:50), as he looks to become the first player to win the Ted Lindsay Award for three consecutive years since Alex Ovechkin did it with the Capitals from 2007-2010. The only other players to complete the three-peat were Wayne Gretzky and Guy Lafleur, back when the award was still known as the Lester B. Pearson Award. That all said, Connor will be in tough this year as one would probably assume that Nikita Kucherov is the early favourite to win.
The other nominees include Tampa Bay’s Nikita Kucherov, this season’s Art Ross Trophy winner after finishing his year with 128 points, and Chicago’s Patrick Kane, who finished the season in third in league scoring with 110 points. As always, it’s an impressive group of nominees where a case could be made for any of them to win, and it will be interesting to see how the players vote. This season’s recipient will be announced on Wednesday, June 19th during the 2019 NHL Awards which are held in Las Vegas.
