A major anxiety for Oilers fans as the team heads into training camp is the health of Connor McDavid. After injuring himself in the final game of the 2018-19 season, it isn’t guaranteed that the Oilers’ captain will be ready to start the season. That would certainly put the team behind the eight-ball in what’ll already be a challenging season.
Fortunately, we have some good news on the McDavid situation. The Oilers hosted an informal “captain’s skate” today at Rogers Place and McDavid took to the ice. He didn’t appear to be holding back at all, and, based on some videos floating around, his skating appeared as good as usual.
After the skate, McDavid spoke with media and said that his knee felt good while he was skating and that he’s working towards being cleared for opening night on Oct. 3 in Vancouver.
Edmonton’s first pre-season game is a couple of weeks from now and, as I said above, McDavid still has just under a month to get himself up to 100 percent for the start of the season. There’s no guarantee he’ll be ready for pre-season games or even the beginning of the season, but today’s skate appears to be a positive sign.
