According to the Czech hockey site, Sport.cz, former prospect David Musil has signed to play in the Czech Republic with HC Ocelari.

Back in 2011, David Musil was the Oilers first pick in the second round (31st overall) and was touted for his strong defensive play. While his size, strength, and positioning were never in question, it was Musil’s lacklustre skating ability that really held him back from being able to make the jump to the NHL. In the six years following his draft, the Calgary native was only able to land himself a cup of coffee with the Edmonton Oilers and it made sense that he would look for further opportunity elsewhere.

Musil spoke about heading back to Europe and what he can provide (keep in mind this is a translation):

From what I can put together, HC Ocelari was in need of an upgrade on the defensive side of the puck and they feel as though David Musil can help to fill that hole. According to the team’s coach, Musil could play a prominent role for his new team:

Needless to say, this news wasn’t all that surprising when you consider that Musil had only played four games with the Oilers in the six years since he was drafted. A pro hockey career has a very short lifespan and it makes sense that Musil will want to try to make some cash while he can for a team that is going to show him some love. While the terms weren’t disclosed on his new deal with HC Ocelari, you’d have to guess that he’ll be making more than any of the offers he got on this side of the pond (assuming he got offers, of course)? At the end of the day, losing David Musil won’t be a massive blow to the Edmonton Oilers he does represent another failed high round pick that the Oilers ended up wasting… as per tradition. Unfortunately, those picks are starting to pile up.
