Decision time coming on Vesel and Muir
The Edmonton Oilers will soon need to make a decision on two former late-round draft picks in Tyler Vesel and Aidan Muir. Both prospects were playing in their final collegiate seasons in the NCAA and will now be looking to turn pro.
TYLER VESEL
AGE | 23 | BIRTHPLACE | Duluth, MN, USA |
POSITION | C | SHOOTS | R |
HEIGHT | 180 cm / 5’11” | WEIGHT | 190 lbs |
NHL DRAFT | 2014 round 6 #153 overall |
Vesel, a 6th round pick in 2014, was drafted as a 20-year-old after a fine offensive season in the USHL (71 points in 49 games). Though lacking overall side, Vesel is a willing combatant, fierce competitor, and leader as was shown by his selection as team captain this past year. Moving forward, Vesel will need to continue to work on his footspeed and consistency to succeed at the professional level, but he does play a position that the Oilers are currently lacking in Bakersfield which should translate to some opportunity. Vesel was also a draft pick under Craig MacTavish which should help his chances of signing considering the former GM is still with the organization.
Vesel’s final NCAA season: 36GP-11G-21A-32P
AIDAN MUIR
AGE | 22 | BIRTHPLACE | Brampton, ON, CAN |
POSITION | LW/RW | SHOOTS | R |
HEIGHT | 193 cm / 6’4″ | WEIGHT | 212 lbs |
NHL DRAFT | 2013 round 4 #113 overall |
Muir, the former 4th round pick in 2013, is labelled as a power forward but is often inconsistent and fails to use his immense size to his advantage. Though already 212 lbs, Muir could stand to add more mass to his tall, expansive frame. Standing at 6’4″, Muir is not afraid to grind along the boards nor does he shy away from the tough areas of the ice. Like many college graduates, Muir will need to continue to work on his skating and consistency as he has, at times, been criticized for his inconsistency.
Muir’s final NCAA season: 27GP-4G-8A-12P
THE CLOCK IS TICKING
The Oilers will have until August 15th to sign either/both prospect(s) before they become unrestricted free agents. Considering the lack of depth at the forward position on the organizational depth chart, it would seem likely that one or both of these players will be signed.
