Good news, Oilers fans! After months on the shelf recovering from surgery and a quick bout with COVID, Dylan Holloway has finally been cleared to get his season started with the Bakersfield Condors.
For a lot of Edmonton Oilers fans — myself included — Dylan Holloway has been a prospect to watch since he was selected at 14th overall at the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. After ripping up the NCAA in his second season with the University of Wisconsin, Holloway has drawn plenty of interest around here as we all wait to see what he’s able to do in his first season of professional hockey. The bad news, however, is that Holloway had to go through a couple of surgeries to correct an issue with his wrist, but today we got word that he’ll be ready to make his debut with the Bakersfield Condors very soon and I cannot wait to see how this goes.
Before the season started, Cam Lewis ranked Holloway as Oilersnation’s second-ranked prospect in the system after a very successful second season with the Badgers.
Likely the biggest bright spot among Edmonton Oilers’ prospects last season was the performance of 2020 first-round pick Dylan Holloway.
When the Oilers selected Holloway with the No. 14 overall pick last fall, there was a little bit of skepticism around the choice as he seemed to profile more as a middle-six, checking forward rather than an offensive dynamo that would usually go in the first half of the first round.
That perspective has largely been erased thanks to the post-draft season Holloway just put together for the Wisconsin Badgers. Holloway finished fifth in scoring among all NCAA players in 2020-21, a major breakout after his Freshman performance the year before.
There was talk that Holloway could push for a spot on the Oilers out of training camp this season, but, unfortunately, that’ll be put on hold as he underwent wrist surgery and will miss at least the first three months of 2021-22. This is obviously an unfortunate blow, but it’s better Holloway misses time and puts the issue behind him because he’s a very important player for the organization moving forward.
Now that Holloway is cleared to get started with the Condors, I can’t help but wonder how long it will take him to work his way into the Oilers lineup. That’s not to say I’m expecting him to be here immediately, but based on the skillset and toolbox, I can’t imagine it will be too long before he gets his first taste of NHL action. We shall see.
