A new video game set around the year 2310 pays homage to the Edmonton Oilers’ 1988 Stanley Cup victory.
The game, named Starfield and developed by American-based developer Bethesda Softworks, is a space-themed open-world action role-playing game where you are able to land on more than 1,000 different planets. Trevor Robb of the Edmonton Sun shared a screenshot from the game on Twitter that poses the Edmonton easter egg.
“In a museum on the Saturn moon, Titan, is a “championship ice hockey stick used on Earth in the city of Edmonton, Canada during a 1988 championship game.”
Oddly enough, that’s not the only time Edmonton is brought up in Starfield. There’s a meal called the ‘CAN-UCK – EDMONTONIAN’ which is labelled for brand pierogies and gravy, uncanned.
Some believe these references are a tribute to BioWare, a game studio based in Edmonton that developed famous titles such as Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
Another video game that mentions the city is ‘Until Dawn’ which takes place in the Alberta Rockies.
Who would’ve thought that centuries later the legacy of the Edmonton Oilers and the city would live on in outer space. Jokes aside, this isn’t the first time the Oilers or Edmonton have been referenced or used in pop culture.
Most recently, HBO’s adaptation series of ‘The Last of Us’ was filmed in Edmonton featuring the Alberta Legislature and parts of downtown including 100A Street, 104th Street and 108th Street.
The team itself hasn’t made any appearances in movies or shows, but it’s always neat to see artists or athletes outside of hockey represent the Oilers. Most famously Kobe Bryant was spotted wearing an Oilers’ Gretzky jersey before a playoff game with the Lakers in 2002.
Iconic artists such as Drake, Justin Bieber and Snoop Dog have proudly worn Oilers’ jerseys when performing concerts in Edmonton.
Kevin Smith who’s known for his role in ‘Clerks’ and various other films and shows has always shown his love for the Edmonton Oilers and has been referred to as a mega Oilers’ fan. Smith is often spotted wearing the teams jersey or silks with similar colour schemes.
With how vast of a game Starfield is, it’s possible we haven’t seen the last of Edmonton references. With that being said I challenge anyone out there to put out a GTA V Edmonton Mod. Probably extremely unlikely to happen but a man can dream of a game that showcases the entire city of Edmonton.
