Oilers at Canadiens Postponed due to COVID

For the first time this season, a North Division game has been postponed as a result of positive COVID results on the Montreal Canadiens. Unfortunately, there will be no Oilers to watch tonight, my friends.
Up until about an hour ago, we’ve been very lucky that no games in Canada had been cancelled or postponed because of the virus, but those good vibes ended this afternoon after news broke that the Montreal Canadiens discovered a couple of positive results on their roster, triggering the NHL’s COVID protocols. While something similar happened earlier in the year after Jesse Puljujarvi got an inconclusive result on one of his tests, that game was only pushed back by an hour, which makes this outright postponement much more curious. Does that mean there are more than two Habs dealing with this same thing and we just don’t know about it yet? If not, isn’t this what the taxi squad is for?
From the NHL:
The National Hockey League announced today that, as a result of two Montreal Canadiens Players entering the NHL’s COVID Protocols earlier today, the team’s game tonight against the Edmonton Oilers will be postponed. The decision was made by the League’s, NHLPA’s and Club’s medical groups. The League will provide a further update tomorrow.
At this stage, we have no idea when this game will be made up or how the NHL will handle the second matchup from this three-game series that’s slated for Wednesday, but I can certainly tell you how disappointing it is at the moment that we’re unable to cheer our boys on as they try to extend their winning streak. Right now, the Oilers are rolling and I could not have been more excited to settle in and watch them do their thing against Montreal, but when it comes to COVID,  the league and NHLPA are clearly taking no chances with the health of its players so they made the call they felt they had to make.
What will be interesting to watch over the next 24 hours is what kind of new information we get about what happened here. I mean, teams all over the league have played with a player or two under COVID protocol so it almost makes me think there’s more to the story than we know right now. That said, this is purely speculation on my part so the only thing we can really do is wait and see how this all shakes out. As Lowetide always says, we wait…
