This morning, the Edmonton Oilers announced via their social channels that the team has loaned defenceman, Philip Kemp, to Vasby HK of the Swedish Allsvenskan hockey league.
Kemp, a right-handed defenceman taken in the 7th round (208th overall) of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, has spent the past three seasons with Yale University and would have gone back for a fourth as the team’s captain had the league not shut down as a result of COVID-19. As a result of the shutdown, Kemp was forced to miss out on his senior year with the Yale Bulldogs but won’t end up foregoing the season entirely as he now has a fresh three-year entry-level contract with the Oilers that allows him to be loaned over to Vasby in Europe instead. He is the latest of many Oilers prospects and young players that have made their way to European leagues as we await the return of the AHL and NHL, which will hopefully get going early in the new year.
Kemp spent the past three seasons playing for the Yale Bulldogs, registering nine goals and 18 assists for 27 points over 88 games. The 21-year-old native of Greenwich, Connecticut, was mid-way through his most productive season in the NCAA before the league was suspended in the spring as a result of COVID-19 and has yet to play a game since. Thankfully, that will change with this new assignment to the Allsvenskan hockey league. In May of this year, Kemp was named Bulldog’s captain for the 2020-21 season which would have marked his fourth and final campaign in the NCAA, however, the league was cancelled on November 12th, leaving the 6’3″ defender to begin his new adventure in Sweden where he will suit up alongside fellow Oilers prospect, Raphael Lavoie.
During the 2019-20 season, Kemp played in 32 games with Yale, registering three goals and eight assists to go along with 10 PIMs and a +4 rating. Kemp was later named to the ECAC conference All-Academic Team, his third selection for the squad.
For more on Phil Kemp, Jason Gregor spoke to him at length in an interview that was posted here.

LAST DAY FOR THE 2020 BLACKOUT COLLECTION!

For this year’s Blackout Collection, we’re introducing some new designs while also bringing back some old favourites as well. As for the new items, we launched a new hoodie, t-shirt, and toque that we’ve never done before and as you’ll soon see, these babies are sharp. In addition to the new designs, we’ve also relaunched the black-on-black logo hoodie as well as the classic Nation Hat (both flat brim and dad style) with the same esthetic from a few years ago. These two items were huge sellers back in 2016 and after hearing your feedback about wanting us to bring them back, that’s exactly what we did. But be warned, these items are all limited edition and once they’re gone they’re gone, so I’d recommend squashing your internal desire to procrastinate to make sure you get all of your Christmas shopping done before everything sells out. Check out all of the Black Friday deals here.
