This morning, the Edmonton Oilers announced via their Twitter account that Cooper Marody has been recalled from the Bakersfield Condors ahead of tonight’s game against Colorado. 

With Jesse Puljujarvi and Kailer Yamamoto being assigned to Bakersfield yesterday, the Oilers needed to round out their roster ahead of tonight’s game against the Avalanche and it was Cooper Marody that got the call. At first, I thought they might recall a veteran tweener like Brad Malone as a stopgap until one or both of those guys come back, but it makes sense that they would want to try and replace Puljumoto with a similar skillset. By my eye, it’s a smart choice for a team that desperately needs some offence from the wings. In Bakersfield, Marody is on a point per game pace while playing in all situations and this has clearly caught the attention of the big club as he’s earned his second recall in a matter of weeks.

In late October, Jason Gregor interviewed Condors Head Coach, Jay Woodcroft, and asked him about Marody’s game:

In his first recall, Marody got into only two games with the Oilers and averaged 8:52 of ice time while playing mostly on the fourth line. That’s not an ideal spot for him to play but it’s not exactly surprising for a young guy to get his feet wet there either. What will be interesting to watch is if the Oilers coaching staff gives him a chance to play up in the lineup in a role more suited to his skillset or if they’ll continue to ease him in slowly. Personally, and maybe this is just me, I’d like to see the Oilers give him the chance to show what he can do with some skilled linemates rather than asking him to bang and crash with the fourth line boys, but I guess we’ll have to see what happens.

In seven games with the Condors, Cooper Marody has put up 10 points (3G, 7A) with four PIMs and a +1 rating.
