Edmonton Oilers recall Philip Broberg from the Bakersfield Condors

2 years agoAccording to our own Jason Gregor, the Edmonton Oilers have recalled Philip Broberg from the Bakersfield Condors to fill in for the injured Slater Koekkoek who went down with a lower-body injury last night against Winnipeg.
Early in the first period of last night’s rematch against the Jets, Slater Koekkoek went to throw a hit on Evgeny Svechnikov near the bench and fell awkwardly into the boards, suffering a lower-body injury in the process. Koekkoek was able to get up and walk off on his own, but you could tell right away that he was in some significant pain. In his post-game presser, Dave Tippett said that Koekkoek would miss some time but that he was considered day-to-day, meaning someone had to be recalled to fill the gap. Enter Philip Broberg. Now in his third post-draft season and first with the Bakersfield Condors, the 6’3″ Broberg is earning stellar reviews after putting up 10 assists in 13 games played so far, making this recall an interesting storyline to follow even if he only plays in a couple of games.
A couple of days ago, Patrick Williams from AHL.com wrote about the Condors and asked head coach, Jay Woodcroft, how Broberg is fitting in and what the future may hold:
“I’m very excited about Philip Broberg and his potential effect on the Edmonton Oilers one day,” Woodcroft said. “For me, he is in a great spot, because he’s adjusting to the North American brand of hockey. He’s playing important minutes. He has been someone who’s impressed at the offensive blue line. He’s got great legs.“And for him, as a young player, as a 20-year-old [in a tough league], he’s going to make some mistakes. But when those gaffes happen, they’re not on the front page of the newspaper [in Edmonton] or leading the evening sports programs. That’s what the American League develops, to learn from those moments in games and then eventually show growth, but I think he’s building confidence every day. I believe he’s growing before our eyes.”
While we’ll have to wait and see when Broberg actually gets into his first NHL game — maybe even tomorrow against the horrible Chicago Blackhawks — I think it’s fair to say that Oilers fans are excited to find out what the 8th overall pick from 2018 can bring to the lineup. We’ve all read the scouting reports about his size, speed, and ability to make plays from the back end, but it will be very interesting to see how those skills translate to the National Hockey League. As Woodcroft said in the quotes above, there is going to be a learning curve for Broberg as he continues on his journey as a professional hockey player, and this first recall of his young career could give us our first taste of what’s to come.
