Edmonton Oilers reportedly sign Stuart Skinner to three-year contract extension

1 year agoIt looks like the Edmonton Oilers and goaltender Stuart Skinner have agreed to a new contract.
Sportsnet’s Jeff Market reported on Monday morning that the two sides were closing in on a deal and then insider Elliotte Friedman said that he believed that the contract is worth $2.6 million annually for three years.
Skinner, a native of Edmonton, was selected by the Oilers in the third round of the 2017 NHL Draft from the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the WHL. He had a couple of difficult seasons transitioning to the professional level in the first two years of his entry-level contract but found his groove with the Bakersfield Condors during the pandemic-shortened 2021 season.
Following that campaign, the Oilers and Skinner agreed to a two-year bridge contract worth $750k annually. He suited up for 13 games with the Oilers in 2021-22 while Mike Smith was injured and posted an impressive .913 save percentage. In 2022-23, Skinner was slated to be Jack Campbell’s backup but he’s posted a .915 save percentage over 19 games and has clearly taken over the starter’s net.
The 24-year-old was set to become a restricted free agent for the second time in his career this summer. The three-year contract covers the final two control years that the Oilers have over him and it also eats up one year of unrestricted free agency.
