The Oilers continued with their offseason housekeeping today as they signed their AHL’s leading scorer, Josh Currie, to a two-year contract. 

Though the Josh Currie signing is likely to be just another a depth signing, his story is certainly interesting and you can’t help but feel happy for the guy that he was finally able to sign an NHL deal. In his last year in junior, Currie shot the lights out, scoring 104 points (49 goals, 55 assists) in 68 games with the Prince Edward Island Rocket he captained but still went unnoticed. Despite the successful fourth season in the QMJHL, Currie went undrafted and had to work his way up through the pro ranks, something he’s been able to do at every level so far. After spending three years in the ECHL with three different teams, Currie made his next jump to the AHL level after being a late-season pickup by the Bakersfield Condors where he has spent the past three seasons.

During the 2017-18 season, Currie led the Bakersfield Condors in scoring after putting up 20 goals and 26 assists for 46 points in 68 games. To this point in his career, the 5’11’ right-winger has posted 106 points (52G, 54A), 129 PIMs and a +7 rating in 188 games with the Condors. As of this posting, no details on the money side of his contract have been released but I’ll be sure to update things as details come out.

Considering we could likely all use a refresher on players like Currie that we don’t get a chance to see every day, I thought it would be a good idea to dive into the Internet machine to find out a little bit more about him.

After last season finished, the Bakersfield Condors put together a few fun facts about Currie that I thought was worth sharing.

After digging into his story, it’s hard not to cheer for a guy like Josh Currie who will be pushing for an NHL job for the first time in his career. The guy has basically had to scratch and claw his way into every opportunity he’s ever had in hockey and that’s the kind of determination that you have to respect regardless of what happens with him and the Oilers. While it may seem like a longshot that he ends up playing games for the Oilers, you don’t want to doubt him either because he’s been exceeding expectations basically his entire career.

Not to mention, the Oilers don’t exactly have a whole lot of proven options on the right side and that could provide Currie with the window he needs to break through? Maybe? At the end of the day, the worst that can happen with this signing is that the Condors get their leading scorer back and Currie probably gets a bump in pay. It may seem like a longshot that he cracks the NHL lineup, but based on his story, I’ll be one guy that’s pulling for him to keep moving forward. Congrats on the new deal, Josh!
