This afternoon, the Bakersfield Condors announced via their Twitter account that the Edmonton Oilers have signed defenceman Logan Day to a one-year NHL entry-level contract.
The Oilers took care of a little housekeeping today as they re-signed pending free-agent defenceman, Logan Day, who led the Bakersfield Condors in scoring from the blueline with 34 points (7G, 27A) to go with 14 PIMs and a +14 rating in 64 games played. In his first full AHL season, the native of Seminole, Florida, found himself playing alongside William Lagesson in all situations and handled himself incredibly well, helping the Condors reach the second round of the Calder Cup playoffs for the first time in franchise history. Based on his numbers and output, it makes perfect sense for the Oilers to bring Day back for another year.
If you didn’t already know, Day’s journey to pro hockey is certainly anything but standard. After getting into two games with Providence College in 2014-15, he transferred to Endicott College for a pair of seasons where he amassed 78 points (30G, 48A) and 63 PIMs in 56 games played. After finishing up at Endicott, Day signed an AHL deal with the Bakersfield Condors where he played in 10 games, potting two goals with the Oilers’ farm club as they finished up their 2017-18 season. Last summer, he signed a one-year AHL contract to play with the Bakersfield Condors and really became an integral part of the Jay Woodcroft’s defensive group.
While we don’t know what the future holds for Day, one would assume that he’ll spend all of next year with the Bakersfield Condors as he continues to hone his craft and help the Condors build upon their successful 2018-19 season. That said, I also remember thinking that there was no way that Josh Currie would spend any time with the Oilers when he signed either. All I know for sure is that this is a kid with an interesting story and it’s hard not to cheer for a guy that’s had to bust his ass for everything he’s got.
