According to the Bakersfield Condors, the Edmonton Oilers have signed Ryan McLeod to a three-year entry-level contract which will start in 2019-20. McLeod also put pen to paper on an AHL amateur tryout contract, making him eligible to join the Bakersfield Condors on their playoff run without burning off a year of his ELC.
When the Saginaw Spirit got bumped out of the OHL playoffs on Monday night, it seemed like only a matter of time before the Oilers would get some housekeeping done with the former 40th overall pick. Drafted in the second round of last year’s draft, McLeod was assigned to the OHL during the pre-season and got off to a hot start with the Mississauga Ice Dogs where he put up 38 points (12G, 26A) before being traded to the Saginaw Spirit. In Saginaw, McLeod’s production dipped slightly, he scored seven goals and 17 assists in 32 games, but ended up finishing at a similar point-per-game pace as last year.
Over the course of his four years in the OHL, the 6’2”, 207-pound centre played in 261 regular season games, amassing 194 points (61G, 133A), 111 PIMs, and a +10 plus/minus rating. In 50 career playoffs games, McLeod added another 39 points (12G, 27A), 14 PIMs and a +18 plus/minus rating. Now that he’s done with his junior career, McLeod will get his first real taste of pro hockey with the Bakersfield Condors as they kick off the second round of their playoffs on Friday against the San Diego Gulls. While we don’t know how much McLeod will play, the Condors are running with an 11 forward, seven defencemen configuration right now, it will certainly be valuable to have him in that environment.
So who is Ryan McLeod? Dustin Nielson wrote about him shortly after landing with the Oilers at last year’s draft.
Once again the Oilers had a player who was expected by many to go higher fall into their laps. Most drafting rankings and insiders expected McLeod to be a late first rounder.
He’s projected as a third line center/winger with the possibility of playing a bit higher in the line up at times. A versatile forward with size who skates the like the wind fits perfectly with where the Oilers are headed. His favourite player and namesake is Ryan Smyth so he should get bonus points.
Overall Grade of Oilers Selection B+
