The Edmonton Oilers announced via their social media feeds that they have re-signed forward, Tyler Ennis, to a one-year contract worth $1 million.
Ken Holland continues to lay down an array of low-cost bets in free agency as he’s decided to bring back local boy, Tyler Ennis, on a one-year contract. Ennis, who came over at the trade deadline in exchange for a 4th round pick, played in 12 total games for the Oilers (3G, 3A for six points split between the regular season and playoffs) before suffering a nasty leg break in the play-in round against Chicago. Fortunately, Zach Laing reported recently that Ennis has healed up and gotten himself back on the ice, which is excellent news in terms of getting himself prepped and ready for the next season. The 31-year-old spent his short stretch with the Oilers playing in the top nine, and I would expect that to be the same case again whenever the upcoming season kicks off.
From where I blog, I think bringing Ennis back on a short-term, low-cost deal will provide the Oilers with another player that can chip in with some offence while also adding some much-needed competition to that left side. And to have him locked in on such a reasonable contract provides Holland with a little bit more flexibility to make further deals and fill the goaltending hole that’s still open behind Mikko Koskinen. If Ennis can come back to the Oilers and put up similar numbers as he did last season in Ottawa/Edmonton, then I think we’ll all be very satisfied with this contract as the year rolls on. Personally, I think it’s a solid deal for both the Oilers and the player and I’m pretty happy to see this one get done.
In 70 games played last season, Ennis finished his 2019-20 season with 16 goals and 21 assists for 37 points to go along with a 49.5 CF%, 52.3 oZS%, and 14:43 in average TOI.
