Filip Engarås is the latest prospect to sign a deal within the Edmonton Oilers organization.
This afternoon, Engarås signed an amateur tryout agreement for the remainder of the 2021-22 season with the Bakersfield Condors. Additionally, he signed a two-year American Hockey League (AHL) contract beginning with the 2022-23 season.
Engarås is a 22-year-old Swedish forward that the Oilers drafted in 169th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft. He’s a 6’0″, 198 lb forward who’s spent the last couple of the years with the University of New Hampshire in the NCAA.
The Swede had a productive time with New Hampshire. In 80 games, Engarås scored 21 goals and 47 points. This past season was his best, scoring seven goals and 21 points in 33 games, the third most on his team.
Engarås joined New Hampshire during a difficult time in the university’s history. They finished no higher than 8th in Hockey East during his time and won 47 games out of 127.
It’s a good time for him now to join the Condors. They’re in a retooling period with so many players developing and moving on to play with the Oilers. Bakersfield has 19 regular-season games left, which gives him plenty of time to settle in before the postseason.
The expectations aren’t high for Engarås, and history proves the organization will allow him to develop. They’ve done it now with Markus Niemelaninen, who made his NHL debut this year after being drafted in 2016. The same can be said for Vincent Desharnais, who signed an NHL contract this year at 25, and James Hamblin, who also signed after joining the Condors on an AHL deal two years ago.
Only time will tell! As for now, Engarås and the Condors go up against the Stockton Heat tonight as they continue to get stronger as the postseason approaches.
