Earlier this morning, Colby Cave’s wife, Emily, announced the horrible news that the 25 year old had passed away after a battling a brain bleed in a Toronto hospital. In the moments after, current and former teammates turned to social media to pay tribute to a man that was known for being as generous and kind as he was hardworking and determined.
Since we fans rarely get to see the human side of the professional athletes we watch on a nightly basis, I thought it was important to remember Colby Cave for not only what he did on the ice but who he was as a person. With that in mind, I wanted to put together a little something from his friends, family, and teammates to show how incredible of a human being he was and how we lost far more than just a hockey player. As you’ll see, Colby Cave was the type of man that touched the hearts of everyone he came into contact with and he will be sorely missed.

To my best friend & love of my life, Colby 🤍 My heart is shattered. The amount of physical, mental, and emotional pain I am in when I think about never seeing, touching, or holding you again is unbearable. You are and will always be my person, my hero, the greatest thing to happen to me. I never dreamed of being a widow before our first wedding anniversary. Although, every cell in my body is lost without you, I promise to continue to make you proud. You were the best friend, husband, doggy daddy, and oh how I wished to see you as a baby daddy. I’ll see you again soon, Colb. You’ll be in heaven meeting me with a warm wet kiss. You’ll be with me every step of the way. I don’t want to stop writing just like I didn’t want to stop holding you this morning at the hospital. You are my everything. You always will be. Thank you for now being the best Guardian Angel. Just as you ended your vows, I am going to end with one word, AGAPE. ✨

“Colby was a special person! He signed with the Bruins as an undrafted player but his accomplishments in the WHL told a different story. His leadership qualities were beyond his years! When he arrived at development camp and in Providence for the 2015-16 season, he exhibited Patrice Bergeron-like characteristics, on and off the ice! Driven and committed to be an NHL player, Colby was also uniquely unselfish with his own NHL dream, helping his teammates and his coaches, game-by-game and day-by-day! The Hockey World lost a great person who was beloved by his teammates and everyone that was fortunate enough to spend time with Colby Cave.” -Don Sweeney, Bruins GM
