FRIGHT NIGHT!

Its a scary time of year, and among the scariest things out there is a looming deadline and no fresh ideas. So, for those who are close to panic on what to wear trick or treating, Jacques Plante (in photo) and I have some suggestions.

CLASSIC

When choosing your mask for the big night, several things factor into the decision. Ease of purchase and a basic but compelling design are both major items. Gerry Cheevers made perhaps the most famous mask in NHL history with a basic white canvas and black marker.
It remains a classic.

CREATIVE

There are always those who want to be a little more creative, and those "artsy" types may want to head for the candy with an original type like this one from Daniel Bouchard. Notice the impressive detail and modern lines, and most especially the letter on his chest (no WAY this photo makes it with the other letter).

JUST THROW SOME PAINT ON IT

For guys like me who don’t really plan on knocking on doors (just making sure the kids are safe), the Chico Resch "I’ll think of something later" edition might be the way to go. Notice the complete lack of thought placed into the idea–mask good, paint good. Thriller!

ACTUALLY SCARY

That’s a pretty wicked mask. What’s more, the man who wore it–Gilles Gratton–was the original "way out there" guy, to the point where his nickname was "Gratoony the loony" and he earned it by doing things like hanging around naked after practice. For hours!

MASK/UNIFORM COMBO

Gary Bromley puts it all together, with scary mask and noxious uniform that is universally regarded as dreadful. This gives the wearer the confidence that no matter what happens, the other guy isn’t going to be able to overcome the sheer terror the wearer will instill on others. An award winner, every year.

THE BEST!

This is my choice for best Oiler mask of all time, although the goalie pads are pretty frightening (especially for modern goalies!).

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

When in doubt, show up with someone WAY better looking than you. That way, your costume choice has little importance. At this late date, whether its a party or taking the kids out for a night of trick or treating, buy a goalie mask! They’re pretty frightening all by themselves.
