Game Day Notes: Detroit Red Wings at Edmonton Oilers

Timing is everything. The Edmonton Oilers entered training camp with question marks on right-wing and a passel of unproven players. Entering preseason, we discussed names like Jesse Puljujarvi, Drake Caggiula, Anton Slepyshev and distant (but rising) bell Kailer Yamamoto. Luck, injury and early success allowed Yamamoto to win the day.
And then he struggled, Caggiula and Slepyshev found their game and on Friday both of the elder wingers impacted the score sheet. We’ve been following the NHL game long enough to write the rest of the script: Caggiula and Slepyshev emerge, win the available minutes, and Kailer Yamamoto is sent back to junior.
A funny thing happened on the way to the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. It’s probably just a blip but may give Yamamoto one more chance to show well in NHL November. If he gets a slot in the lineup today, and shows well, the young man could hang around past the 9-game mark.

QUICK HITS

  • Today’s game marks the first meeting of the year between the Oilers and Wings and they will face off again in Detroit on November 22nd. In their last 10 matchups, the Oilers are 3-4-3 against Detroit, a record they’ll look to improve this afternoon.
  • The line of Jussi Jokinen—Ryan Strome—Drake Caggiula had three offensive and 11 defensive zone starts (one neutral) on Friday night (information from Natural Stat Trick). One hopes we see the line again.
  • Leon Draisaitl ranks No. 6 in 5×5 points per 60. That’s a massive number and should be getting more attention.
  • Connor McDavid ranks No. 9 in even-strength points. He is a machine in this area, the most difficult portion of the game to score in.
  • Oscar Klefbom ranks No. 8 in shots on goal by a defenseman (42).
  • Cam Talbot ranks No. 17 in even-strength save percentage among NHL starters.
  • The Red Wings are 3-6-1 in their last 10 games and current have a goal differential of -3 on the year (38GF, 41GA). The Oilers are currently at a -9 differential (30GF, 39GA).
  • The Oilers don’t really fare well in afternoon games as they currently sit with a 52-72-9-6 all-time record.
  • Red Wings forward, Dylan Larkin, currently leads Wings in scoring with 13 points (2G, 11A), while Anthony Mantha leads the team in goals with six.
  • Detroit’s special teams are rolling at 15.2% for the power play and 82.5% on the penalty kill.
  • Ty Rattie is hammering AHL goalies and could be a call-up option. His AHL numbers (10gp, 6-3-9) have him clear of his teammates in Bakersfield.
  • Tyler Benson is playing well in Vancouver with the Giants. He went 1-2-3 last night and is 4gp, 2-2-4 on the season.

GAME DAY QUESTIONS

  • The latest Matt Duchene deal is dead for now, meaning the brilliant forward is still available. Should Edmonton be in on this?
  • Should Kailer Yamamoto play on Nuge’s RW today? If Anton Slepyshev is unavailable, which option would you choose?
