The Oilers came out of the gates flying and opened the scoring just over two minutes into the first frame. Connor McDavid got the puck behind the net and bounced it off of Anton Forsberg for his 42nd goal of the season.
Right off the hop in the second period, the Sens tied the game at 1-1. Ottawa defenceman Jake Sanderson joined the rush and fired a shot from the high slot past Jack Campbell…
Not long after that, Zach Hyman restored Edmonton’s lead by capitalizing on a penalty shot…
The Oilers made the score 3-1 later in the second period while on the penalty kill. Connor McDavid did some excellent forechecking work to swipe the puck from Thomas Chabot and he then found Ryan McLeod who had snuck into Ottawa’s slot unnoticed…
The Sens brought the game back to within one goal immediately after, as Claude Giroux scored on the same power play…
Ottawa managed to tie the game before the end of the second period. Defenceman Erik Brannstrom rushed up the ice and got a soft goal past Campbell to make the score 3-3…
Early in the third period, Brett Kulak sprung Jesse Puljujarvi in on a breakaway and he roofed a shot over Forsberg to give the Oilers another lead.
The Sens had a prime opportunity to tie the game again with a power play but the Oilers instead converted their second shorthanded goal of the afternoon. Kulak worked the puck into Ottawa’s zone, fired it towards the Sens’ net, and Derek Ryan chipped it past Forsberg…
The Oilers iced the game late in the third period with a power play goal that made the score 6-3. Sens defender Travis Hamonic shoved Zach Hyman into Forsberg and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins buried the puck into the open net. Forberg was injured on the play and was taken off the ice on a stretcher.
