GDB 27.0: HATS FLYING…JONES IS 50TH

Last night Ryan Jones became the 50th player in Oiler history to score a hat trick. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was the 49th earlier this year, while Taylor Hall was the 48th last season. Hall tallied his 2nd three-goal game of his career earlier this year and now he is one of only 16 players to have multiple hatties in Oilers’ history.
Something tells me you haven’t seen the last hat trick from an Oiler this season.
The Oilers have had 165 hat tricks in the regular season . Wayne Gretzky had the most with 43, Jari Kurri and Glenn Anderson tallied 20 each, Mark Messier scored 13 while Esa Tikkanen and Ryan Smyth sit in 5th place with five respectively.
Blair MacDonald had the first trick on October 19th, 1979 against the Quebec Nordiques. He actually scored the first three in Oiler history before Gretzky got his first on February 1, 1980 v. the Jets. The Oilers have had two players score a hat trick in the same game six times, with the last time being December 20th, 1985 at home against the Kings.
The Oilers did manage to have three players register a hat-trick in the same game. Gretzky, Kurri and Lindstrom did the deed against the "Mickey Mouse" New Jersey Devils on November 19th, 1983. Kurri had five goals that game, so those three combined for 11 of the 13 goals. UNREAL.
When you realize that three players had a hatty in the same game you can understand why Gretzky called them a Mickey Mouse organization.

WILL IT HAPPEN AGAIN TONIGHT?

Pat Hughes used to own the NHL record for fastest two shorthanded goals, but Esa Tikkanen bettered him in 1988. Hughes is still tied for one Oiler record though, most goals in a game. Hughes only scored one hat trick in his career, but he did it in style popping five against the Calgary Flames on Feb 03rd, 1984. Hughes and Kurri had one five-goal game, while Gretzky had four of them.
The Oilers have had 10 regular season hat tricks v. the Flames in franchise history, but only three of them have come in Edmonton.
Hughes Feb 03rd, 1984 (home)
Paul Coffey Dec 26th, 1984 (away)
Jari Kurri Jan 27th, 1985 (away)
Glenn Anderson Oct 28th, 1985 (away)
Craig MacTavish Dec 01, 1985 (home)
Esa Tikkanen Nov 24th, 1986 (away)
Glenn Anderson Oct 16th, 1987 (away)
Craig MacTavish Dec 22nd, 1990 (away)
Jason Arnott Mar 20th, 1995 (home)
Alex Selivanov Apr 08th, 2000 (away)
MacTavish only had two hatties in his career and both came against the Flames. The other players to have mulitple hatties include: Simpson, Weight, Murphy, Lumley, Czerkawski and Arnott with (2), Selivanov (3) and MacDonald, Klima and Coffey with (4).

QUICK HITS

  • The only guarantee lineup change will be in goal with Nikolai Khabibulin starting. Anton Lander is a possiblity, but I doubt he plays.

  • Ales Hemsky had his best game of the year last night, and if he can build on that the Oilers will again have two scoring lines.

  • Like I said earlier, if Smid is going to be a legit top-four D-man he needs to add some offence. He plays enough minutes that he should pop 4-6 goals and 15-20 points a year. Jason Smith had six seasons where he scored 14-20 points, and there is no reason Smid shouldn’t be able to match that now that he plays 20+ minutes a night.

  • There has been 13 hat-tricks in the NHL this season and the Oilers have three of them. The Leafs have two between Phil Kessel and Joffrey Lupul.

  • Nugent-Hopkins is the only player to register a trick while losing in regulation. Matt Duchene lost in OT, while the other eleven helped their team win.
GAME DAY PREDICTION: The Flames have won 15 of the last 17 games between these provincial rivals, and they are currently riding a six-game winning streak in the Battle of Alberta. The Oilers will end that streak tonight with a 4-3 win.
OBVIOUS GAME DAY PREDICTION: After watching their teammates combine for five goals in the 3rd period, Jordan Eberle and Nugent-Hopkins will combine for four points tonight. RNH loves HNIC and he’ll go 1-1-2.
NOT-SO-OBVIOUS GAME DAY PREDICTION: After the game Ryan Jones will come out to the bar by the Oilers dressing room and hand back the hats that were picked up on the ice last night. He’ll have signed everyone of them, and his ranking on the fan-favourite list will continue to climb.
