Hockey Talk

Playing defense in the National Hockey League is no easy assignment. Especially in today’s NHL, where clutching and grabbing are penalties, the pace is breathtaking and the decisions rapid fire. The dangers are also enormous, that fact hitting home for Oiler fans during the pre-season. Former Oiler Sean Brown will talk to us today on Nation Radio about the Taylor Fedun play, the rigors of the NHL game and his experiences at the highest level of hockey.
Sean Brown was a first round draft pick by the Boston Bruins and came to Edmonton in the second Bill Ranford trade (the one that sent the goalie back to Boston). Brown had a solid NHL career, and his time in Edmonton was spent as a rugged blueliner and a crowd favorite. If you looked up "willing fighter" in the hockey dictionary, you’d find a photo of Brown. He took on all comers and showed no fear.
Today we’ll talk about the toll that took on his career, and how many injuries he suffered in the NHL and during his time in Europe.
Brown (hey it isn’t his fault the Canucks have had some dreadful uni’s) spent several years in Europe after his NHL career came to a close, and is now back in Canada so his young family can grow up in one spot. We’ll talk about that too–the nomad’s life of the hockey player, and the impact it can have on the family.

Nation Radio, today at Noon

I know Thanksgiving is about baking pies and timing out the thawing of the turkey (this has been an issue in our house for many years. It usually involves me ciphering and that’s a dangerous thing). However, if you have the time, I’d love to have you drop in for Nation Radio.
Scheduled to appear at noon on Team 1260:
  • Timo Seppa from Hockey Prospectus will join me to talk about the HP Annual. It’s getting a lot of play as a "must read" and reminds me of the old Bill James Abstracts. The Oilers section alone is exceptional.
  • Thomas Drance, who interviewed Elliotte Friedman this week about his newfound interest in advanced stats.
  • Matt Bugg from dobber hockey will talk to us about getting an early read on the 2012 entry draft. I’ve been hearing that it’s a very good draft, and will ask Bugg for his opinion. We’ll also discuss Gernat and his ability.
  • Corey Graham, Oil Kings PBP man will discuss Gernat, the Oil Kings solid start, the lack of scoring from the usual suspects and the pure joy of a WHL road trip.
Email questions and comments are welcome at nationradio@theteam1260.com and tune in if you have time. Happy Thanksgiving!
