Another day, another Oiler on the waiver wire. This time, it’s @Kyle Turris.
It’s been a difficult season for Turris. He inked a two-year deal with the Oilers in the off-season after being bought out by the Nashville Predators and the hope was that he could drive a more offensively oriented third-line in Edmonton. That hasn’t happened.
Turris has three goals and nine points in 27 games and has been largely playing on the wing as of late. Jujhar Khaira has taken over the third-line centre role and has been very effective. Khaira has three goals and 11 points, all at even-strength, and has a positive, on-ice goal differential of 12-to-10. The Oilers are being outscored 18-to-8 with Turris on the ice this season.
Turris owns a $1,650,000 cap hit this season and next. If he clears and is re-assigned to the Taxi Squad, which seems very likely, the Oilers will get a slight cap savings. They’ll also open up the roster flexibility to move Turris from the Taxi Squad to the active roster freely, just like we’ve seen with @Tyler Ennis, @James Neal, and @Alex Chiasson, who have all cleared waivers this season.
Again, given the fact Turris has a $1,650,000 cap hit next season, I don’t see anybody putting in a claim. Money is tight all around the league.
