With Cam Talbot suffering from an illness, the Oilers have recalled goaltender Laurent Brossoit from AHL Bakersfield. It appears he’ll dress as Al Montoya’s backup tonight when the Oilers play the Colorado Avalanche.
Brossoit was waived after the Oilers acquired Montoya from the Montreal Canadiens back in early January. Since being sent to the AHL, Brossoit has posted a .916 save percentage in eight games with the Condors.
I imagine this will be a short-term stint in the NHL for Brossoit. So long as he isn’t on Edmonton’s roster for 30 days, he won’t need to go through waivers to be sent back down to the AHL. Talbot surely won’t need 30 days to get over this illness.
Montoya will make his first actual start for the Oilers tonight. He’s made three appearances with the team, but all of them came in relief of Talbot. In those three games, Montoya has posted a sparkling .956 save percentage.
Another interesting tidbit about Montoya is that the Oilers originally gave Montreal a fifth-round pick to acquire him, but it becomes a fourth-round pick if Montoya plays seven more NHL games. Like I said, he’s played three thus far with the Oilers, so it’s almost certain he’ll play in three more after tonight.
