Tobias Rieder is an Edmonton Oiler again and at a very reasonable price. Though he had an off year last season with a career low 12 goals, I’m looking forward to watching him flourish in a new environment. Before last week, I admittedly didn’t know a ton about Tobias Rieder, so I thought I’d take a look at all the goals he scored last season to see what kind of player we’re getting.
I’m guessing Rieder will start the season in our bottom six somewhere. He’s still young and learning so I could see him get the opportunity on the second line with Draisaitl at some point in the season as well. Him and Draisiatl have played together a few occasions during international games, so they might have some hidden chemistry we don’t know about yet.
If you haven’t read it yet, Cam Lewis dove deep into Tobias Rieder and whether or not he’d be a good fit for the team back in June. Here’s a little bit of what he had to say:
Rieder would be a nice fit on the Oilers. He’s a two-way winger who skates well, kills penalties, and can chip in a little bit of offence. He’s a left-shot winger who generally plays on the right side, which is Edmonton’s biggest need this summer.
With that said, I’m looking forward to seeing Rieder suit up in an Oilers jersey. He’s got something to prove, and I think he can be successful. Let’s take a look at some of his goals from the 2017-18 season to see what we can expect.
Here’s one of many goals where Tobias shows off his speed and sprints down the side of the ice for a breakaway. He finishes it with a nice wrister passed the goalie. Note how he jumped up the ice as soon as the puck was turned over to his players. He did a great job recognizing this and it paid off in his favour with a goal and a corsi.
Did you know Rieder could take slap shots? I sure didn’t. This was one where he was in the right place at the right time and just stepped into a rolling puck. I’d definitely like to see more of these kind of plays from our Oilers forwards.
Rieder made this goal look a lot easier than it actually was. A one-timer from your off hand after a bullet pass is not an easy thing to do. He made himself open on the powerplay and nailed the timing of this one-timer perfectly. Pretty nice feed from Clayton Keller as well.
This is another great example of Rieder using his speed through the attacking zone to create scoring chances. By a combination of bad defence by the Avs, and a good rush by the Kings, Tobias Rieder was able to get behind the defence to receive a pass and finish the goal.
Probably Rieder’s nicest goal of the season. He explodes up the ice past the two Avalanche defensemen for the breakaway and finishes it off with a nice shot again. If this is the kind of speed Chiarelli was looking to add, he found it. From other highlights I’ve watched, Rieder is just as fast coming back the other way. His two-way effectiveness should definitely fill a gap we are missing in our bottom six right now.
One of Rieder’s skills appear to be finding open space in front of the net. Here’s another goal he created some distance for himself which opened up the door for an open net deflection on the Wild goaltender.

A few garbage goals never hurt anyone, right? Gotta admire his ability to go hard to the net to pot these uglier ones.

Where do you see Tobias Rieder fitting in our lineup? He has the ability to play right-wing so I am really curious how he’d look beside Draisaitl. He’s likely more fit in a bottom six role, but he there’s a chance we might see some chemistry there.
