According to the NHL Player Safety Department’s Twitter account, the NHL has handed down a two-game sentence for Pat Maroon after last night’s headshot on Drew Doughty.
When I wrote about the hearing this morning, I guessed that Maroon would get dinged with a one-game suspension based on him having no real history of dirty play and also while considering how much of last night’s game he missed. Clearly, I was wrong. Despite having no record for goonery or being a cheap player, Pat Maroon still got two games for wrongly guessing that Doughty would end up with the puck and catching him with a high hit.
From the video:
“As Doughty approaches McDavid, McDavid pokes the puck past Doughty and up the wall. Doughty, having never touched the puck, turns to head back up ice in pursuit of the loose puck. Maroon steps down and delivers a high, hard hit to Doughty that makes substantial head contact.”
No argument there, unfortunately.
“It is important to note that Doughty never touches the puck and, therefore, is never eligible to be checked on this play.”
This could be the longest interference penalty on record. *sigh*
“The onus is on the hitter to ensure the player he is hitting is eligible to be checked.”

NOW WHAT?

At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter whether you agree with the suspension or not, but the Oilers will still be without one of their Top Six guys for the next two nights. Now the question becomes who will step up into that role? Would McLellan give Juhjar Khaira a chance with Nuge? Camo Larry? Does Auvitu make his season debut as a forward? We shall see.
