Jesse Puljujarvi got the call yesterday and he’ll be in the lineup today at Madison Square Garden. There are some similarities between JP’s second season after draft and that of Leon Draisaitl in the fall of 2015.
  • Draisaitl was sent to Bakersfield but was recalled fairly quickly. He went 6, 1-1-2 between October 9 and 24. He was recalled in time to play against the Montreal Canadiens October 29 and scored twice in a 4-3 win, the winner coming at 18:58 of the third period. Leon from Nuge and Taylor Hall, and the crowd went wild.
  • Puljujarvi was sent to Bakersfield and played in 10 games, going 1-4-5 between October 6 and November 4. We find out the rest of the story later today.

QUICK HITS

  • Cam Talbot plays today, does that mean Laurent Brossoit gets the start against the Washington Capitals? He’s played in just three games this year and nothing since October 17.
  • Talbot has been lights out on the road, posting a 3-2-1 record with a .938 save%.
  • Anton Slepyshev is on IR, coach Todd McLellan sounded frustrated about the injury. Slepyshev has a helluva shot, along with size and speed. Opportunity is knocking but the Russian winger is injured again (groin).
  • Drake Caggiula isn’t on the injured list but unlikely to play. He blocked a shot against the Devils and is listed as day-to-day. The other extra forward is Jujhar Khaira, who hasn’t played for the Oilers since October 28.
  • I’m hoping we get to see overtime again today, McDavid-Draisaitl is brilliant entertainment during 3-on-3.
  • The Rangers PP is currently 15/63 which ranks fifth in the NHL with a 23.8% success rate. At MSG, the Rangers are ninth in the league with a 23.4% success rate. Needless to say, the Oilers would be best served staying out of the box.
  • From Jason Gregor this morning, “McDavid, Draisaitl, Lucic, Maroon and Klefbom have combined 315:44 TOI on the PP. Have 0 goals. Once they finish life will be a bit easier for the Oilers.”
  • Kevin Shattenkirk is on fire and currently ranks second in Rangers team scoring with 5G, 11A for 16 points. Eight of those 16 points have come on the power play.
  • The Rangers are currently one of the NHL’s hottest teams, posting a 7-2-1 record in their last 10 games.
  • New York has scored a league-high 56 goals this season. The problem is that they’ve also given up 57 which ranks them among the league’s worst in terms of what they’ve given up.

LAST 10 GAMES

  1. Connor McDavid 10, 3-9-12
  2. Leon Draisaitl 8, 4-5-9
  3. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 10, 4-4-8
  4. Patrick Maroon 10, 4-3-7
  5. Milan Lucic 10, 2-4-6
  6. Oscar Klefbom 10, 1-2-3
  7. Ryan Strome 10, 1-2-3
  8. Matt Benning 9, 1-1-2
  9. Drake Caggiula 7, 1-1-2
  10. Adam Larsson 10, 1-1-2
  11. Mark Letestu 10, 1-1-2
  12. Darnell Nurse 10, 0-2-2
  13. Kris Russell 10, 0-2-2
  14. Anton Slepyshev 7, 1-1-2
  15. Zack Kassian 10, 0-1-1
  16. Kailer Yamamoto 5, 0-1-1
  17. Cam Talbot 10, 2.57 .921

Bubbling Under

  • Kailer Yamamoto went 1-3-4 in his Spokane Chiefs debut last night, announcing his return with a fantastic game. Whatever his disappointment at getting sent back, he seems to be applying it effectively in making life miserable for the opposition.
  • Tyler Benson scored twice for the Vancouver Giants, he’s up to 5gp, 4-2-6 on the year.

Quotable

  • Rick Nash talks Connor McDavid:  “Yeah, he’s so good on his edges. He’s much faster than everyone else. His skill level is higher than everyone else. You haven’t seen a player like him since Crosby. These guys, they’re one-in-a-decade type players.” Brian Heyman, Newsday
