McDavid named captain at world hockey championship

Oilers captain Connor McDavid was named as the Canadian captain for the upcoming World Hockey Championship in Denmark coming up in May.
Captain McDavid, a World Championship gold medalist from 2016, will be joined as assistant captains by Buffalo’s Ryan O’Reilly and St. Louis’ Brayden Schenn. Both O’Reilly and Schenn have had some World Championship success as they have each medalled in previous tournaments. In McDavid, O’Reilly and Schenn, Team Canada’s leadership group has represented Canada several times while also having varying success at the NHL level. When asked about the leadership mix, Bill Peters talked about having a blend of overall experience:
“We have a mix of youth and veterans on our team, and the three players chosen to wear a letter know what it takes to be successful in international competition and that will help us be successful in our ultimate goal”
Team Canada kicks off their tournament on Friday, May 4th, against Team USA in Herning, Denmark. The preliminary-round games will wrap on May 15th with the medal rounds being done on May 20th, a Sunday. For Team Canada, they will look to add a third gold medal in four years as they’ve won the tournament in 2015 and 2016, with the 2017 tournament ending with a silver medal after dropping the championship game to Sweden.
The World Hockey Championship will run from May 4-20th, 2018, in Copenhagen and Herning, Denmark, at the Royal Arena and Jyske Bank Boxen respectively. You can view the full schedule here.
