News and Notes: where we’ve only ever said nice things about Penner and Souray

If you’ve ever see Penner or Souray in public, and decide to hassle them for an autograph or whatever, pay attention to their mood. It isn’t that we don’t think they’re great guys, but after watching this, this, and this, we wouldn’t be inclined to take any chances.

If you’re wondering about the damage inflicted above, Dallas finally put Landon Wilson on the injured reserve list today — he’s been listed as day-to-day since suffering an “upper body” injury after Penner hit him in the face. Meanwhile, Craig Weller missed his second game last night with a head injury.

The Edmonton Oilers continued their recent practice of rewarding minor league call-ups for their strong play by sending them back to the minors when they sent out Ryan Potulny yesterday.

Potulny’s been exceptional since joining the team eight days ago, recording three assists in four games. He also had a +15 Corsi rating. Still, it isn’t all bad; Potulny will get to play in the AHL all-star game next week as a result of the demotion.

Since firing Chris Cichocki and bringing in Matt Thomas (as well as a half-dozen new players), the Stockton Thunder haven’t lost in regulation time, posting a 7-0-1 record. It’s a nice change for Thunder fans, who have led the ECHL in attendance only to watch their team lose more often than not.

For Sunday’s game, the Thunder will be wearing Oilers jerseys and then auctioning them off to those in attendance. Also, since I’m on the topic of the Thunder right now, here are their goaltending statistics so far into the season:

None of these guys have been posting great numbers (admittedly on a lousy team), although Andrew Perugini (who I admit I’m optimistic about) looks like the best of the bunch so far. All three need to show more to climb up the ladder.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have claimed defenceman Cory Murphy off re-entry waivers from the Florida Panthers (h/t to Spector).

Murphy’s an undersized offensive defenceman who has struggled with injuries this season, and although he’s been a prolific scorer in Finland and managed six points in five AHL games this season, he hasn’t translated that to the NHL as of yet. It’s tempting to compare him to the last undersized offensive defenceman the Lightning stole from the Panthers, but it’s a bit of a stretch to do so.
