The Edmonton Oilers will be looking to rebound from their first shutout defeat since early January when they visit the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night as +105 underdogs on the NHL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
The Oilers were unable to solve Winnipeg goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who turned aside all 28 shots he faced in regulation and overtime, as well as a pair of shootout attempts, to lead the Jets to a 1-0 victory on Sunday. That marked Edmonton’s second straight defeat in as many road contests going into Tuesday night’s game at Xcel Energy Center.
Oilers at Wild | OddsShark Matchup Report
The Oilers’ power outage in Sunday’s loss as a +110 wager extended a worrisome trend that has seen the club score two or fewer goals in three of their past four outings. That comes in contrast to a hot start to the season, with the Oilers posting five straight victories while potting an average of 4.4 goals per game.
While Edmonton shooters have struggled to find the back of the net of late, the Oilers goaltending tandem continues to shine. It was Mike Smith’s turn in Winnipeg, where the veteran stopped all 23 shots he faced through 65 minutes including 10 shots while shorthanded.
But even with Smith and fellow netminder Mikko Koskinen combining on an impressive 2.22 team goals-against average that ranks fifth overall in the NHL, the Oilers have turned in dismal results when scoring three or fewer goals in road contests, earning the win just five times over their past 27 such outings.
Edmonton’s recent low-scoring affairs have sparked a steady run for the UNDER on the totals at online sports betting sites, which has gone 4-1 over the past five games, including three straight road outings.
The Wild return to action as -125 home favorites after claiming their first home victory of the season on Sunday, a 4-3 win over the visiting Montreal Canadiens as -125 chalk. Offense has also been a major concern for Minnesota during a dismal start, with Wild shooters averaging just 2.25 goals per game over their first eight games.
Minnesota has scored four times in each of its past two home outings, but has struggled in recent clashes with the Oilers, falling to defeat in four of its past six, including two of three on home ice, according to the OddsShark NHL Database.
