Connor McDavid’s goal early in the second period of Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals added his name to the record books.
After a faceoff win, which saw the Oilers get a cycle going, Mattias Ekholm took the puck for a skate around the Stars’ net before firing a shot on net that McDavid could bang in the loose change and extend Edmonton’s lead. This, along with an assist on Zach Hyman’s goal a few minutes earlier helped get McDavid to 100 career playoff points.
In doing so in his 64th career playoff game, he became the fourth fastest player ever to reach the century mark in postseason scoring. The only other players to have done it quicker than him were Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Leon Draisaitl, who achieved it a little over a week ago in Game 6 of the second round.
The fact that McDavid got to this feat barely 10 days after Draisaitl did the same further reinforces just how clutch the two have been over the years when the games matter. Heading into tonight’s game, the dynamic duo sat fourth and second all-time in playoff points per game with Gretzky and Lemieux sandwiched in between. It’s one thing to have one of the most proactive players in the game when the postseason is on, but it is another to have two such players who are ranked near the top of the all-time rankings.
All of which is to say that McDavid’s excellence this spring is a major reason why the Oilers are within striking range of birth in the Stanley Cup Finals. Records such as this one further validate what has already been well-established for years: he is one of the best to ever do it and no one in the game at the moment comes close to matching his prolific abilities.
At the time of writing, McDavid currently has 25 points (four goals and 21 assists) in 15 playoff games which has him tied for first in Oilers scoring with Draisaitl. If the way that tonight’s game started is any indication, there is a decent chance that he could catapult into the lead unquestioned.
