The Shawinigan Cataractes are undefeated through two round-robin games at the 2022 Memorial Cup and one of the Edmonton Oilers’ top prospects has been a big part of their success.
Xavier Bourgault, Edmonton’s first-round pick from the 2021 draft, was named the first star on Thursday night, as he scored a goal and had two assists in Shawinigan’s 3-2 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs. Bourgault also had a goal and an assist in Shawinigan’s 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings on Tuesday and sits tied for the tournament lead in points with five.
For an Edmonton fan, the ideal scenario is for the Oil Kings to face off against Bourgault and the Cataractes in the Memorial Cup Final on Wednesday.
The Oil Kings will play the Bulldogs on Friday night and then round-robin play will conclude on Saturday with the Cataractes playing their QMJHL rivals the Saint John Sea Dogs, who are hosting the tournament. A win for Shawinigan over Sain John would give the Cataractes a bye to the finals while a win for the Oil Kings over Hamilton would eliminate Hamilton and guarantee Edmonton a spot in the semi-final.
Bourgault scored 36 goals and 75 points for the Cataractes during the regular season and added 12 goals and 22 points in 16 games in the playoffs. This is Bourgault’s last ride in Major Junior as he’ll be eligible to turn pro in the fall.
