With Andrej Sekera getting hurt and ultimately exiting last night’s game, the Oilers have recalled defenceman Keegan Lowe from the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL.
Yes, it’s Kevin Lowe’s son. Many will immediately jump to this being nepotism within the Oilers organization. But at this point, it’s best just to give the guy a chance to see what he’s got. Reports from Bakersfield suggest Lowe is having a very effective season for the Condors. Obviously being the son of somebody in management in the organization will open a lot of doors, but there’s certainly merit to this recall based on Lowe’s play this year.
As many here will remember from his WHL days with the Oil Kings, Lowe is a big, tough, physical defender who plays a shut down game. Though it isn’t a stat I like to use, Lowe leads the Condors with a +9 rating. He also has 10 points in 35 games with the team.
Lowe was originally drafted in the third round of the 2011 draft by the Carolina Hurricanes. He played two games with the Canes back in 2015 and got into two different fight withs Vinny Lecavalier.
Sekera has not been placed on the Inured Reserve at this point, so Lowe’s recall is on an emergency basis. He won’t suit up tonight with the team as Yohann Auvitu will slide into the lineup for the first time since Jan. 25.
