Oilers release 12 players following MacEwan/NAIT all-star game

Rookie camp came to a close last night as the Oilers dropped a 2-0 decision to the MacEwan/NAIT hybrid all star team (did we agree on what to call them)? Along with the end of the rookie camp came a set of roster moves.
The team announced, almost immediately following the game, they’ve released 12 players from their amateur tryouts. Of course, this was more or less expected, but the list does include some notable names.
Oil Kings forward Trey Fix-Wolansky was invited to camp, as well as the Young Stars tournament out in Penticton. He didn’t put up a point during the three game tournament, but he played some solid hockey. I thought he also showed some flashes of skill late in the game last night against MacEwan/NAIT. Although he wasn’t brought into the main camp, he made some good impressions.
Fix-Wolansky’s teammate Davis Koch was also let go today. Koch made more of an impact over the rookie tournament notching three assists in his two games tournament games. He’ll be staying in Rogers Place as he begins his fourth full season with the Oil Kings.
Lane Bauer was another one of the released players with Oil Kings connections. I was impressed with his effort last night in the final game, but he was held without a point during his three games in Penticton. The 21-year-old is no longer WHL eligible, so it’ll be interesting to see where he ends up this season.
Sahvan Khaira, the brother of Jujhar, was released as well. The 19-year-old defender has size (6’3’, 207 lbs) and some decent tools but his lack of offensive ability concerns me. He’s struggled with the puck and it’s shown in the numbers (three goals in 180 WHL games). Given how crowded the Oilers depth chart is on the blueline, you have to think that this may have been his only shot with the team.
Rounding out the list is Luke Coleman (Calgary, WHL), Austin Glover (UBC Thunderbirds) Steven Owre, Grayson Pawlenchuk (Red Deer, WHL), Brandon Saigeon (Hamilton, OHL), Liam Schioler (Regina, WHL), Austin Strand (Seattle, WHL) and Ethan Szypula (Owen Sound, OHL).
