Oilers sign Paigin, Starrett to ELC’s

7 years agoThe Edmonton Oilers announced today the signings of 2015 7th round selection Ziyat Paigin and free agent goaltender Shane Starrett to two-year, entry-level contracts.
The news comes five days after the Bakersfield Condors signed Paygin to an amateur tryout.
The 22-year old defender has played his whole hockey career in Russia’s KHL and VHL development league.
Paygin has had an up and down experience when it comes to his time in the KHL. He told Russian website Sport-Express about his time in Russia here. I highly recommend giving it a read, as Paygin talks about his struggle to find consistency overseas.
Last season was Paygin’s most successful in Russia, where he had a breakout year for HK Sochi scoring 27 points in 37 games in which he also earned a trip to the KHL All-Star game.
This season saw him battle injuries that limited his playing ability.
22-year old Shane Starrett just wrapped up his second season playing for the NCAA’s Air Force Academy. In his two seasons, Starrett played in 70 games posting a 1.95 GAA and a .9245 sv%.
He also posted a record of 42-15-9 record.
Standing at 6’5″ and 194 lbs, Starrett is a big man in the crease.
This is what Air Force coach Frank Serratore, in his 20th season coaching the team, had to say of his goaltender last fall:
“He is a great goalie who has covered up a lot of mistakes for us, which great goalies do. He is a big man in the net with great athleticism. He really has not had a bad game for us since he came to the academy. The games he had that he did not succeed are the games we let him down.”
Starrett was selected to take part in the Blackhawks development camp last July.
The move adds more depth to the Oilers goaltending ranks as the team signed NCAA goalie Nick Ellis last summer. The Oilers now have three goaltenders in the organization under the age of 24.
