Oilers sign William Lagesson to 3-year ELC

7 years agoThis afternoon, the Edmonton Oilers announced the signing of 2014 fourth-round pick William Lagesson to a three-year entry level contract.
The 21-year old, 6’3, 198 lb left shot defenceman just finished his second season playing NCAA hockey for UMass (Amherst).
In 63 NCAA games, Lagesson put up 15 points.
Drafted out of the Swedish Junior League, Lagesson put up 20 points in 44 games with Frolunda.
In January of 2016, SBNation’s College Hockey blog named him the eighth-best NHL prospect amongst college defencemen.
He’s a physical, tough defender that could be a nice fifth or sixth blue liner for a NHL team down the road. His -3 plus/minus doesn’t look impressive when looking at it alone, but he’s on a woefully inept defensive team at UMass. He performed very well in all three zones at the World Juniors, and has proven he can be an aggressive, mean defenseman in his own end.
During the same blog’s 2017 midseason report released on January 12th, 2017, writer Jeff Cox said Lagesson “has been a bright spot on the defensive side of the puck.”
We will get a chance to see what Lagesson has to offer as he will likely be with the Bakersfield Condors next season and forgo his remaining two years of NCAA eligibility.
