It’s Friday afternoon and that means a brand new episode of Oilersnation Radio is wrapped up, edited into an auditory masterpiece, and set to get you ready for the weekend. This week, we recapped the NHL Draft, looked at the early hours of free agency, and took a few guesses on what’s to come.
It’s been a very busy week for the National Hockey League and we kicked off today’s episode of the podcast with a look at free agency and the moves the Oilers have been able to pull off so far. To start, we looked at some of the rumours that have been circling our team over the past couple of weeks, including reports from the likes of Bob McKenzie that Ken Holland would be going all-in on Jacob Markstrom. Yet, as the morning went on, it became clear that Markstrom’s ask was too high for the Oilers to make work and Holland was forced to walk away. From there, we looked at the work that the Oilers were able to get done today, including the two-year deal for Kyle Turris that came down this morning as well as the one-year extension for Tyler Ennis. For all of us, it was actually surprising to see how much Ken Holland has been able to get done for as little money as he has, which is the level of GMing we haven’t really seen much around here. Getting away from free agency for a moment, we looked back at the NHL Draft and the first draft in franchise history where they picked only forwards. From Dylan Holloway in the first round to Carter Savoie in the fourth round, the Oilers clearly had a plan to replenish their forward depth and they executed on it. Lastly, we wrapped up this week’s podcast by heading back to free agency and taking some swings at what the Oilers might look to do in the coming days.
