Hockey players are often known for going above and beyond in the community they play in and for just being all around great guys. That greatness was on full display this past week after former Oiler, Pat Maroon, surprised one of his biggest fans with a day that she’ll never forget.
About a month ago, Brett Arlinghaus, a local teacher and Oilers fan, reached out to Pat Maroon on Twitter to see if there was any chance that he could make some time for one of his students named Tessa. Tessa is one of Maroon’s biggest fans and an award winner at her school, so her teacher thought it would be cool if he could organize something special for her. Rather than ignore the tweet, Patty decided that he wanted to get in on the surprise for Tessa and what ended up happening is something that she’ll never forget. Not only did Maroon take time to meet and talk with Tessa, he actually spent over an hour with her, playing mini golf with her and learning a little bit about her life.
On Facebook, Brett wrote:
So, a month ago I reached out to Patrick Maroon through Twitter. I have a student receiving an award at the end of the year and, to say she is a huge fan would be a gross understatement. I thought maybe he could sign a picture or record a video message for her. I told him about her, and what he chose to do was completely next level. He was coming to Edmonton, and he wanted to meet her in person! Not just a 5-minute interaction, he chose to surprise her with a round of mini-golf at WestEd. He spent over an hour and a half visiting with her and giving her a memory that will last a lifetime. I was floored by what a genuine, kind person Patrick Maroon was. The world needs more Maroons. Let’s hope the Oil wake up and sign this guy.
I love everything about this story and everything about Pat Maroon for making it happen. I had seen in his Instagram stories that Maroon was back in town, seemingly to move/sell the apartment he was living in while with the Oilers, but there wasn’t any indication about what else he had in mind. Quick trip to the mall while you’re in town? Okay, I can see that. But this was something else. This is the kind of story that turns players into legends around these parts, and I wanted to take a few minutes to say how cool it was for Pat Maroon to not only meet with one of his fans but to go over and above with the whole interaction. You can see by the look on Tessa’s face that this was a surprise that she didn’t see coming and that excitement was radiating from her.

I’ve watched this video at least three times so far and I keep finding stuff I love about it. The excitement on her face, the seemingly genuine interest on Maroon’s as he learned about her… all I can really say is that everything about this video is great and I’m pumped that Brett decided to share it with the world. Think he’s her favourite teacher? I’d guess so.
And to Pat Maroon, we speak your name.  Now, if only the Oilers will do the same on free agency day and bring this guy back home. Pat, you didn’t have to do this on your off time, but you did and I want to give you huge props for it. This is the kind of thing that pro-athletes can do to change the life of a kid like Tessa, and Patty definitely deserves some love for making it happen. Gord knows we could all use a few more kind people like Patty in the city.
