GDB 56.0 Wrap Up: The losing streak continues, Oilers fall 4-1 in Vegas

If what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas then why do I know that the Oilers lost again? Final Score: 4-1 Golden Knights
Heading into tonight’s game, I had some mixed feelings about what to expect from our beloved Oilers. The last time these two teams met, Edmonton walked away with two points and an overtime win that kicked off the Vegas McBirthday celebration in style. The time before that, the Oilers absolutely demolished the Golden Knights in their first-ever meeting, pumping them for eight goals in the process. So, as you can imagine, those last two wins had me feeling hopeful for a threepeat, but, at the same time, the Oilers have also been hurting our hearts lately and it wouldn’t have exactly been surprising if they got blown out again. Needless to say, this rollercoaster of emotions is all kinds of exhausting.
After making it through the first shot on net and more than half of the first period without allowing a goal, I was starting to feel a little bit better about our chances of winning. That was, of course, until the Golden Knights scored only moments later as a result of some sloppy defence and puck management by the Oilers. But I guess that was the story all night, wasn’t it? The Oilers bled bad goals and lacked the will to muster up any kind of counterpunch. Frankly, it was tough to watch. And when you combine a lack of scoring with the inability to get a save then you’ve got a recipe for a bad time and that’s exactly what happened. At the end of the day, the Oilers got badly outplayed and deserved the result they got — it’s as simple as that. Tonight was another deserved loss that acts as a kick to the pills of fans everywhere as we work through this death march together.
If you can’t score and you can’t get a save then you’re not going to win many hockey games. So it’s not exactly surprising that at the end of this night we’re talking about the losing streak getting extended to five games.
The wrap.

THE BRIGHT SIDE

  • The game is over.
  • The first shot was stopped AND they made it through more than half a period without giving up a goal. Great success. Oh, so that’s not how you win?
  • Leon Draisaitl got the Oilers on the board midway through the third period to break Fleury’s shutout and put some mustard on the turd sandwich that was this hockey game.
  • Jujhar Khaira can apparently murder anyone dumb enough to fight him as he, once again, beat the piss out of his opponent when the gloves came off. This time around, it was Collin Miller that got a face full of fist kisses as he gets added to the list of players that got dummied by Khaira. As always, you can check out the scrap a little bit later over on Khaira’s fight page at HockeyFights.com.
  • Georges Laraque calling the team out for having no heart in the second intermission. I don’t remember the last time I included an intermission interview in the Bright Side but that’s where we’re at. Happy day.
  • As they have all season, the Oilers did another fine job in the faceoff circle tonight, winning 62% of the draws. Good thing it mattered.

THE FACE PALMERS

  • The Oilers got caught running around in their own zone and it ended up costing them the first goal of the night. Ryan Carpenter opened the scoring for the Golden Knights after shaking Lucic behind the net and cashing in on a loose puck that was laying in the slot.
  • Jonathan Marchessault put the Golden Knights up by two goals after he was able to slip his man (Maroon) at the side of the net and get his stick on the puck for a perfect deflection that beat Talbot over the shoulder. The Oilers were actually in a pretty good spot defensively until Marchessault was able to shake himself loose for just a moment.
  • William Karlsson scored the third straight goal for Vegas on a weak power play goal that Talbot needs to stop every single time. Confidence is clearly an issue with Dadbot these days and this was another save that he needed to make that instead ended up as another nail in the coffin.
  • Erik Haula scored the fourth straight goal for Vegas (second on the power play) after getting himself right to the goal mouth and making no mistake on the centring pass from James Neal. By then the game was over and we were all waiting for the clock to run out.
  • Cam Talbot admitted that he would have liked to have four of the goals back against the Panthers, and I was hoping that he’d use the disappointment as rebound fuel for tonight’s game. It goes without saying that Talbot has needed to be better throughout the season so far, and I was looking to see how he would bounce back against the Golden Knights. Unfortunately, the rebound game didn’t happen as Talbot struggled yet again, as he allowed some questionable goals that sunk the ship before it even set sail. Talbot finished the night with 24 saves and a .857 save%.
  • Make it 20 games without a goal for Milan Lucic. The drought is real. At least he hit someone? *sigh*
  • How’d the special teams do? What do you think?
    • PP: 0/1
    • PK: 1/2
  • Kevin Quinn desperately needed a night off.
  • Playing the Golden Knights again reminds me of the time they broke Nugey’s ribs. ?
  • Why or why did I make this #BeetCast bet? It’ll be fun, I thought. *cries* As always, you can follow along and join in over on my Twitter.
