Random Saturday Thoughts

While waiting for the Oilers game, I started randomly cruising the Internet and fell into a hole of looking at past Oilers seasons, some impressive defensive prospects, and anything else I could find to entertain myself. With that said, I invite you all to join me for a little Saturday randomness.

MOAR GOALZ!

Over on the Oilers subreddit, a user named Teraoptic pointed out that the Oilers already have more goals for than they did after the entire 2014-15 season with 97 fewer goals against. That’s shocking. I dug in a little bit deeper just to see how gross the rebuild has actually been and the findings were basically as depressing as you’d expect. Not only have the Oilers already surpassed the goal total from 2014-15 by seven goals, they’ve also slayed the totals from a few of the lost rebuild seasons.
2006-07 – 195 goals for, 248 against
2010-11 – 193 goals for, 269 against
2013-14 – 203 goals for, 270 against
2015-16 – 203 goals for, 245 against
Within the next game or two, the Oilers are likely to add another couple seasons to the kill list with the 2010-11 season and 2009-10 seasons in the crosshairs (212 and 214 goals for respectively). Long story short, we’ve been through hell and no one deserves a run at the playoffs more than Oilers fans.

DEFENCEMEN RIPPING UP THE DUB

I don’t want to get too excited about WHL production but the season Ethan Bear is having is definitely worth keeping your eyes on. At the time of this writing, Bear has 70 points in 65 games and is third in team scoring for the Seattle Thunderbirds. Bears 70 points rank him second in WHL scoring by a defenceman with fellow Oilers prospect, Caleb Jones, following close behind in sixth with 60 points. To put that into perspective, Darnell Nurse’s best year in Sault Ste. Marie (points wise) was 2013-14 season when he finished with 50 points in 64 games.
I think the Oilers would be best served by slow playing both Bear and Jones but it is nice to see a couple of Oilers prospects ripping it up for their respective teams.

SETTLE DOWN, NEW BRUNSWICK

I was cruising around Twitter when I found this clip from a junior game in NB. The clip is grainy and looks like it was filmed with a potato but it still shows some high level penalty box shenanigans. From what I could find, this was game five of a five game series and things completely fell off the rails. In a way, this clip is a throwback to the days when Mike Milbury went into the stands and beat a guy up with his own shoe but it’s probably not a good look for the league these kids play in. If you have a minute, I encourage you to read the comment thread that follows the tweet I posted above. The reactions range from disgust, to laughing, and everything in between.

UHHHHH?

What’s not to love about this clip? I literally have no idea what the analyst is saying but the drawing that goes up on the smart board is either the greatest accident of all time or this guy’s way of getting himself fired. Is this photoshopped? I don’t think so but I can’t say definitively that it’s not. Either way, I burst out laughing when I watched it because I have the sense of humour of a 12 year old. Let me know what you think of the “analysis” in the comments section.
