Some tough news for Dylan Holloway as it appears he may not be ready for training camp.
According to Postmedia’s Jim Matheson, a lingering thumb injury may keep him out from camp. However, we should also mention that Jason Gregor reported earlier in the off-season that Holloway’s wrist could be the issue.
”After Dylan Holloway’s surgery (broken thumb) this spring, Oilers hoped it would be completely repaired for rookie camp next week but it’s iffy the winger takes part,” Matheson tweeted Friday, adding doctors will be doing further examination including x-rays to gauge the healing process.
The injury occurred during a March 15th game while playing for the University of Wisconsin and he subsequently signed his entry-level deal a month later with the Oilers.
The former 14th overall pick in 2020 inked a PTO with the Bakersfield Condors last year, but didn’t appear in any action.
News of Holloway potentially getting a late start to his season is less than ideal. He’s a player the Oilers we’re likely going to have at main camp battling with a plethora of other fringe NHL’ers for a roster spot.
Given his draft status and instant success at the NCAA level, I don’t think it’s unreasonable for him to make the big club this fall. Development time in the AHL could surely be on the menu, too, but this thumb injury could play a part in the start of his season wherever that may be.
