SCOUT’S HONOR

The Edmonton Oilers have had a busy summer. Peter Chiarelli’s appointment as the team’s GM signaled change and we saw plenty in the weeks after he was hired. We should expect more and there are signs the scouting staff shuffle continues.

LAST TIME WE TALKED

On July 10, we had a look at the changes made by the new admin in the amateur scouting area:
  • Bob Green: Director of Player Personnel
  • Stu MacGregor: Head Amateur Scout
  • Bill Dandy: QMJHL
  • Brad Davis: OHL, tier 2 leagues in Q and O
  • Kent Hawley: OHL, QMJHL, tier 2 leagues in Q and O
  • Bob Brown: WHL (and BCJHL based on media comments)
  • Jim Crosson: WHL
  • Scott Harlow: NCAA and American junior leagues (east coast)
  • Frank Musil: Europe
  • Pelle Eklund: Europe
  • Robert Nordmark: Europe
  • Joseph Cucci: Year three, don’t know his area but it might be New England
  • Dave Heitz: Year three, goalie scout
  • Matti Virmanen: Oilers rely on him, gets mentioned a lot in media
  • Sylvain Rodrigue: Year two, goalies.

NOW…..

Oilers have updated a few names and things currently suss out like this:

AMATUER

  • Bob Brown: WHL (and BCJHL based on media comments)
  • Michael Chiarelli: (OHL seems likely)
  • Joseph Cucci: Year three, don’t know his area but it might be New England
  • Jim Crosson: WHL
  • Bill Dandy: QMJHL
  • Pelle Eklund: Europe
  • Scott Harlow: NCAA and American junior leagues (east coast)
  • Dave Heitz: Year three, goalie scout
  • James McGregor: (OHL. He was first mentioned as an Oilers scout spring 2012 but didn’t get listed until now. I know he scouted Yakupov for the Oilers. Appears to be a young up and comer).
  • Frank Musil: Europe
  • Alexander Naurov: (Russian, former Stars pick, retired 2014 as player)

Robert Nordmark left for the Leafs; Matti Virmanen is now on the pro side. I think he might be brilliant. Paul Messier is also listed on the pro side. Nothing on Rodrique I can find, will update as I can.

CHANGES!

We knew the OHL was going to be populated with scouts and it appears Michael Chiarelli is the choice. He certainly has experience. The Bruins website (this was before Mr. Chiarelli was let go this summer) stated
“Mike Chiarelli is in his seventh season with the Bruins organization. He is based out of Ottawa and scouts amateur prospects in Ontario.” Source
