Sport for the North Equipment Drive

Unless you’ve been on a complete news blackout for the past few weeks you already know about the wildfires that have displaced over 80,000 Fort McMurray residents in Northern Alberta. As a result of the fires, there is a substantial need for sporting equipment and our friends at United Cycle and Sport Central are looking to help with an equipment drive.
The goal of the campaign is simple. The fine folks at United Cycle and Sport Central are looking to collect $500,000 worth of new and gently used sports equipment to help those affected by the fires in Fort McMurray. Ideally, they will be collecting donated equipment immediately with the goal of helping Fort Mac residents stay active wherever they are located, as well as their ongoing need to replace equipment that was lost in the fires after the damage has been assessed.
Further to collecting equipment to help immediately the equipment drive will be an ongoing mission to provide the sporting goods required to start a Fort McMurray Sport Equipment Distribution Centre for needy children, and ensure continued support for many years to come. The need for sporting equipment won’t end when residents are able to return home, and this equipment drive will continue collecting equipment indefinitely with this reality in mind.
Both Sport Central and United Cycle will be committing to this project for the long haul and we’d like to help get things off on the right foot, and we’re asking for your help.

TO MAKE A DONATION

If you are able to make a donation, you can drop off your new or gently used sports equipment to:
  • United Cycle – 7620 Gateway Boulevard NW
  • Sport Central – 11847 Wayne Gretzky Drive N
If don’t have any equipment that you can donate, cash donations will also be accepted and allocated towards the purchase of equipment for those affected by the fires. If you don’t have equipment or cash to donate, you can still help out the cause by sharing this article and spreading the word on social media.
Lastly, if you know of any Northern Alberta players or families, teams or communities who need specific sport equipment or sports gear to stay active, contact sports@unitedcycle.com 780-433-1181 ext. 457.
