The AHL cancels remainder of 2019-20 season

3 years agoThis morning, the AHL officially announced that the league has decided to shut down the remainder of the 2019-20 season along with the Calder Cup playoffs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
After suspending its season on March 12th, the American Hockey League has decided to forego the remainder of the 2019-20 schedule and playoffs in favour of planning ahead for next year. According to the official release, the AHL says the current standings and statistics as of March 12 (based on points percentage), are considered to be final and official and will serve as the basis for determining league awards for the 2019-20 season.
Regarding the cancellation, the Bakersfield Condors issued the following statement:
Obviously, we are all disappointed by this news. We will miss having you in the stands, the goals, the hits, the saves, the team, and the camaraderie that comes with Condors hockey. We know that this decision was not made lightly, but was done so in the best interest of the players and the fans. We wanted to let you know that we are working diligently on providing information on next steps regarding your tickets for the un-played games. We are in the final stages of confirming these steps that will provide you with your ticket options in the near future. Certainly the last two months have been trying for everyone and we hope you are all staying safe.
While many were hoping that both the NHL and AHL would be able to find a way to finish up their respective seasons, the Coronavirus clearly had other plans and it will be interesting to see how or if this news affects the major league as well. We all know that the NHL desperately wants to award the Stanley Cup even if it means finishing up later in the year, but the cards appear to be stacked against them and all we can do is wait and see how this plays out.
When the league shut down in mid-March, the Bakersfield Condors had 13 games remaining on their schedule with Josh Currie leading the team in scoring with 41 points (24G, 17A) in 56 games.
