It’s been a crazy weekend of Oilers moves and games, and there have been a few injury transactions so let’s get right into them.
But first, a couple close calls we saw this past week include ALMOST a re-injury of Oscar Klefbom’s hand. In one of his first games back, this past Wednesday he took a stick to the hand against the Penguins and left the ice in discomfort. Luckily he returned next period and all appeared to be okay. Twitter turned into a massive panic room during his absence but it all turned out to be okay.
There have been some injury rumors circling Jujhar Khaira for a while now and him being scratched in last nights game confirmed it for me. No one has specified what he’s suffering from but I”m assuming he’s just banged up.
Matt Benning
On Saturday morning, Matt Benning was placed on the IR, while newly acquired Sam Gagner was called up from the AHL (I literally never thought I would type a sentence like that). We don’t know exactly what is bugging Benning right now, and it’s currently listed as day-to-day upper body injury. It could very well be possible he’s just banged up and the Oilers used it as an excuse to make some room for Gagner to jump in the lineup. Benning didn’t play on Friday night in Carolina, so he definitely needs a few days of rest to heal up whatever’s bothering him.
Andrej Sekera
At the end of last week, Andrej Sekera and the Edmonton Oilers put in a request to the league for Sekera to extend his conditioning stint for two more games. Those two games were on Friday and Saturday, and Sekera is now expected to be activated from the long term injury reserve for the first time this season. By trading away Cam Talbot on Friday night, the Oilers cleared up more than enough cap space to activate Sekera, and we should see his move finalized any time now.
It appears that Sekera had a very solid conditioning stint and is as ready as he’ll ever be for NHL action. He put up two points in five games, and was a +5 rating.I personally, am very nervous/anxious to see Sekera come back. I’m thrilled that we have another veteran defenceman back in the lineup, but I’m a little worried about him catching back up to the speed of the game. God speed, Reggie.
