The Oilers sign Patrick Russell to a one-year contract extension
By Cam Lewis
3 years agoIt looks like Patrick Russell will get another chance to finally score an NHL goal.
The Oilers announced on Monday that they had signed the forward to a one-year contract extension worth $700,000, which is the league-minimum for the 2020-21 season.
Russell appeared in 45 games for the Oilers in 2019-20, recording five assists and 58 shots on net. While he wasn’t at all a contributor offensively, Russell was a reliable defensive forward, playing on Edmonton’s penalty kill and managing a positive Expected Goals For differential at even strength.
I would guess that Russell, who hails from Denmark, has a clause in his contract that will allow him to start the season in Europe. The Oilers have lent a couple of their other European NHLers, Gaetan Haas and Joakim Nygard, to professional clubs in Europe as their seasons are starting earlier than North American professional hockey seasons are.
